1:33:02
I always knew things
would work out for you...
1:33:07
After a while, I started getting hungry.
1:33:10
There didn't seem to be
much food in the house,
1:33:12
so I went out to a store in the neighborhood
and brought back a mess of stuff.
1:33:18
A precooked chicken, vegetable soup, a
bucket of potato salad, all kinds of things.
1:33:27
Ethel had a couple of bottles
of wine stashed in her bedroom,
1:33:32
and so both of us we managed to put
together a fairly decent Christmas dinner...
1:33:37
We both got a little tipsy
from the wine, I remember,
1:33:40
and after the meal was over we went out to sit in the
living room where the chairs were more comfortable...
1:33:47
I had to take a pee, so I excused myself
and went to the bathroom down the hall.
1:33:53
That's where things took another turn.
1:33:58
It was ditsy enough doing my
little jig as Ethel's grandson,
1:34:01
but what I did next
was positively crazy,
1:34:07
and I've never forgiven myself since...
1:34:11
I go into the bathroom,
1:34:13
and stacked up against the
wall next to the shower,
1:34:16
I see a pile of six or seven cameras.
1:34:19
Brand-new, thirty-five
millimeter cameras,
1:34:22
still in their boxes.
1:34:26
I've never taken a picture in my life,
1:34:29
much less never stolen anything,
1:34:33
but the moment I see those
cameras sitting in the bathroom,
1:34:38
I decide I want one of them for myself.
1:34:42
Just like that.
1:34:44
And without even stopping
to think about it,
1:34:46
I tuck one of the boxes under my arm
and go back to the living room...
1:34:53
I couldn't have been gone
for more than three minutes,
1:34:55
but in that time Granny
Ethel had fallen asleep.
