and it's something that I wish
the world would grasp onto

1:17:03
as beautifully as
the Star Trek fans have.

1:17:05
People of all races, religions,
political backgrounds,

1:17:10
sizes, shapes, et cetera,
1:17:13
are all absolutely equal
at a convention,

1:17:16
and nobody is ostracized
because they're different.

1:17:19
I think that attracts
a lot of people

1:17:21
because elsewhere
in their lives,

1:17:23
they don't have
that kind of freedom.

1:17:25
Well, this weekend
was great

1:17:27
because I got to
go to the convention

1:17:29
and pick up some great stuff
at the dealer tables

1:17:31
and meet some of my favorite cast
members from the series

1:17:35
and get their
signature and...

1:17:37
Talking to them,
shaking their hand

1:17:39
is just the most wonderful thing
you can ever imagine.

1:17:41
Well, I also got to meet
1:17:43
a lot of other fans
very similar to myself,

1:17:45
and, uh, they're great,
gorgeous people

1:17:49
who really know how
to place Star Trek

1:17:52
in the proper context
with the rest of their lives,

1:17:55
and that's a unique
gift for fans.

1:17:58
I met a very
wonderfully talented lady

1:18:03
who was a political cartoonist,
1:18:05
an English lady named Sue Coe.
1:18:08
But when she saw Star Trek...
1:18:12
it gave her a vision,
1:18:15
not of a world, necessarily,
that she could live in,

1:18:19
but it gave her a vision that--
it gave her an understanding

1:18:23
that there were people who
were thinking those thoughts,

1:18:26
the people who were
making the show.

1:18:27
The reason most of the people
I know like Star Trek

1:18:30
is it expresses issues that
can't normally be expressed

1:18:34
in today's society without
somebody coming down on you

1:18:37
or looking at you funny
or hauling you off.

1:18:40
My father grew up
in, um, in the Nazi era.

1:18:44
He was in Poland
when it was taken over,

1:18:46
and because he was a German citizen, or
considered German, they were protected.

1:18:50
When they came
to the United States,

1:18:51
he came to realize that the principles
that he grew up with were wrong,

1:18:54
and when we watched Star Trek,
he would tell me,

1:18:56
"The things that they're doing there
is the right thing to think."

1:18:59
The right things, you know, like
treating people like they're equals
