:47:01
- Yeah, to the junk sails.
- Yeah.

:47:03
But I love the way it turned out.
:47:04
I think it gave an exotic quality to the boat.
:47:08
It's beautiful.
:47:09
Rodolphe Guenoden,
the lead animator of Proteus...

:47:13
storyboarded the first version
of this scene...

:47:15
and came up with this great relationship...
:47:17
where Sinbad and Marina
can't help but debate...

:47:21
and squabble over
how to get out of a place...

:47:23
even where there's a giant 12-ton bird
stomping around looking for them.

:47:27
That's a really fun bit of business
between the two of them.

:47:30
We scaled up our bird
but we didn't scale up his brain much.

:47:33
So he's still got a bird brain.
:47:36
Great. He can pick his teeth
when he's done with us.

:47:38
There was a reanimate.
:47:40
We used to have her be so angry at him
that it was a little off-putting.

:47:44
It looked like she was about
to throw him out to be fed to the birds.

:47:50
She used to start punching him, didn't she?
:47:53
She just started to slug him.
:47:55
Here's a transition.
Those are 2D characters...

:47:57
and as we pass up, now they're 3D.
:47:59
Several shots like that
in which we hand off from drawn...

:48:03
to CG, based on what the shot requires.
:48:05
- They look easy, don't they?
- Yeah, when they're done.

:48:09
This next sequence
is a tour de force in layout.

:48:11
We referenced everything from
Olympic downhill to BMW commercials...

:48:15
to anything you could imagine
involving speed or snow.

:48:20
A lot of back-and-forth
between the hand-drawn animation...

:48:23
and CG animation in there.
:48:25
I think we lost him!
:48:27
There's always a struggle with Sinbad.
He's unbelievably capable.

:48:30
Anybody who launches himself off a cliff...
:48:32
and wonders how he'll survive
is obviously pretty brave.

:48:35
And yet, we didn't want to make him...
:48:38
unafraid and invulnerable...
:48:41
and here he is trying desperately
to steer this thing...

:48:44
and he's just barely in control.
:48:45
We had fun trying to find that balance
between superhero and vulnerability.

:48:50
Part of the fun of this sequence
is that it starts out in real chaos...

:48:53
with Sinbad and Marina
really not working together at all.

:48:56
But then, from this point onward,
they sort of find a rhythm together.
