:12:01
To me,
it was more of an evolution.

:12:03
Snowboarding has been around
longer than any of us even know,
maybe over a hundred years.

:12:08
[Richards ]
I believe that snowboarding's
more about the pioneers that started it.

:12:12
Jake influenced the growth
of snowboarding on the East Coast.

:12:14
Tom Sims and Chuck Bafroot influenced
the growth of snowboarding on the West Coast.

:12:19
And then a sport was born.
:12:25
[ Man ]
He was a strange breed.

:12:27
"Individualist"
would be an understatement.

:12:30
Jake Burton was definitely
one of the visionaries,

:12:34
if not the main one
to put the sport over the top.

:12:37
## [Man Singing Rock ]
:12:41
[Burton ]
I got exposed to the whole concept
of snowboarding through the Snufrer.

:12:45
The Snufrer was a product
that was made in the '60s.

:12:48
It had no bindings,
and the early ones had no fins.
So it was just almost rodeo style.

:12:52
But there was something there.
:12:57
[ Ranquet ]
Tom was coming from a sufring
and skateboarding background.

:13:01
He went about it a different way.
:13:04
I wanted to be able
to surf the board.

:13:06
Well, surfing in those days
was all about nose riding.

:13:10
So, I didn't think of
having a big kick on the front.

:13:13
I just wanted to be able to hang five
and ride across the hill.

:13:16
Looking back, it's kind of amazing
I didn't just grab a waterski out of our garage...

:13:19
and go ride it down the snow.
:13:21
'Cause it would have saved
many years of development for me.

:13:25
It was a process of developing
product that couldstop
and turn right and turn left.

:13:30
Definitely a lot of creativity
and a lot of failure.

:13:42
## [Ends ]
:13:49
[Narrator]
By the end of the 70's,
the pioneers had firmly laid down the roots.

:13:52
But snowboarding's future
and its survival remained uncertain.

:13:58
[ Farmer]
People didn't even know what it was.
There was no instructors, no lessons.
