This is supposed to be dramatic. Julie
Adams is so glad Richard Carlson is safe,

1:10:16
but it's so obvious she doesn't wanna get
wet, I'm sure because the water was cold.

1:10:21
It was cold at night. Denning remembers
shooting in the lake one October night.

1:10:25
They were out in the water
and they were tired,

1:10:27
and a prop man brought them brandy
to keep them from freezing to death.

1:10:31
"It worked great
and we were going fine,

1:10:33
then we wrap it up and go
to the dressing rooms."

1:10:36
"They're warm, and all of a sudden..." -
Denning starts slurring his words -

1:10:40
"that brandy hit us like a sledgehammer."
1:10:42
"But out in the cold and the wet
and wind, it didn't bother us at all."

1:10:46
Ricou Browning had
the same thing happen.

1:10:48
Everybody was trying to be nice,
kept bringing him brandy,

1:10:51
and pretty soon,
they had a drunken creature.

1:10:53
So Ricou figured he'd better cut that out.
1:10:58
I think the idea of a drunken
creature is kinda cute.

1:11:01
Julie Adams has a soft spot in her
heart for the creature. She told me:

1:11:05
"The creature scared people,
but there was a sweetness about it."

1:11:08
"In the real classics, there always
is that compassion for the monster."

1:11:14
"I think maybe it touches something
in ourselves, maybe the darker parts,

1:11:16
that long to be loved and think
they really can't ever be loved."

1:11:19
"It strikes a chord. That's what
Creature from the Black Lagoon did."

1:11:40
We're about to get a good look
at the creature's gills pulsating.

1:11:44
Rubber tubes came into
the back of Ben Chapman's helmet,

1:11:47
through the dorsal fin, and ran to the gills,
where there were balloons or air pockets.

1:11:51
On the end of the hose, there was
a guy off camera with a hand pump.

1:11:55
Chapman and this other fellow
worked together to create the effect.

1:11:59
Chapman would open his mouth and
gasp at the same time that the pump guy
