Julie Adams has a soft spot in her
heart for the creature. She told me:

1:11:05
"The creature scared people,
but there was a sweetness about it."

1:11:08
"In the real classics, there always
is that compassion for the monster."

1:11:14
"I think maybe it touches something
in ourselves, maybe the darker parts,

1:11:16
that long to be loved and think
they really can't ever be loved."

1:11:19
"It strikes a chord. That's what
Creature from the Black Lagoon did."

1:11:40
We're about to get a good look
at the creature's gills pulsating.

1:11:44
Rubber tubes came into
the back of Ben Chapman's helmet,

1:11:47
through the dorsal fin, and ran to the gills,
where there were balloons or air pockets.

1:11:51
On the end of the hose, there was
a guy off camera with a hand pump.

1:11:55
Chapman and this other fellow
worked together to create the effect.

1:11:59
Chapman would open his mouth and
gasp at the same time that the pump guy

1:12:02
pumped the gills. That way, it looked
like the gasping made the gills flare out.

1:12:08
Julie Adams is replaced here
by stuntwoman Polly Burson,

1:12:11
who got swept off the boat
by Ben Chapman.

1:12:16
Now a scene shot in Florida,
1:12:17
Ricou Browning swimming underwater
with Ginger Stanley in his arms.

1:12:22
That was our next-to-last shot at Ricou.
1:12:24
From now on, it'll be Ben Chapman
up until the last shot of the movie.

1:12:27
Ricou was recently profiled in People
magazine in connection with Creature.

1:12:31
But he's more proud of a lot of
the other things he's done.

1:12:34
He writes, he's directed,
he created the TV series Flipper,

1:12:37
he directed the underwater parts
of Thunderball, and to him,

1:12:40
Creature was just another movie,
just another job.

1:12:43
Ben Chapman, on the other hand,
revels in having played the gill-man,

1:12:46
and he regularly appears at
sci-fi cons and autograph shows.

1:12:49
He's also given a lot of thought to
what made the gill-man so popular.

1:12:52
Here's some music from The Wolf Man
as Carlson climbs out of the water.

1:12:56
Chapman says that if you look back
at all the thrillers Universal made,

1:12:59
The Phantom, Hunchback, Frankenstein,
Dracula, The Mummy and Creature:
