The Swimmer
"The Swimmer" is a short story by American author John Cheever, published in 1964 in the short story collection The Brigadier and the Golf Widow. Originally conceived as a novel and pared down from over 150 pages of notes, it is probably Cheever's most famous and frequently anthologized story. At one point Cheever wanted to parallel the tale of Narcissus, a character in Greek mythology who died while staring at his own reflection in a pool of water, which Cheever dismissed as too restrictive. As published, the story is highly praised for its blend of realism and surrealism, the thematic exploration of suburban America, especially the relationship between wealth and happiness, as well as his use of myth and symbolism.

The Swimmer
:03:21 - ¿Dónde has estado metido?
- De un lado para otro...
:03:28 No será porque tengamos
aquí un mal servicio, ¿eh?
:03:32 ¡Qué día hace!
:03:35 ¿Has visto alguna vez
un día tan espléndido?
:03:38 Vamos, ven a saludar a Helen.
:03:49 Viejo zorro. Es maravilloso
volver a verte. Estás estupendo.
:03:54 Bueno, tú también.
:03:56 - Bueno, no tengo muy buen color hoy.
- Bebí mucho anoche.
:04:02 No me lo puedo creer. ¡Neddy!
:04:04 No me lo puedo creer. ¡Neddy!
:04:10 ¡Cuán hermosos son tus pies en
las sandalias! ¡Oh, hija de príncipe!
:04:23 Seguro que anoche
bebiste demasiado.
:04:25 - ¡Qué alegría nos da verte!
- Oh, Neddy, te echábamos de menos.
:04:31 Siéntate y cuéntanos cómo te va.
:04:33 - ¿De dónde venías?
- Andaba por aquí.
:04:36 Se me ocurrió pasarme por aquí
a nadar con vosotros. Fijaos qué agua.
:04:42 - Y mirad qué cielo.
- Sí, tú míralo.
:04:44 Me parece que todos
bebimos demasiado.
:04:47 Yo creo que fue el ron.
Bebí demasiado ron.
:04:50 - ¿En qué fiesta?
- La nuestra.
:04:51 - No te perdiste nada.
- El típico fiestón del sábado.
:04:55 Los mismos chistes, las mismas caras...
No conocemos tanto que ni coqueteamos.
